This year one of my intentions is to be more thoughtful about how I fill my fridge and our tummies. I’ve been quite surprised with how many items I purchase that I can pretty easily make my own self - like pickles, jam, stocks, and snacks. I have a long list of pantry staples I’d like to start preparing and I thought I’d share part of that journey with you here.
I grew up in Montana during my teen years, a bit out in the woods. The sky was blue, the evenings so quiet, and we couldn’t see our neighbors. I loved it.
We had a large garden with sunflowers, corn, pumpkins, squash, and the best raspberries and strawberries I know I will ever eat.
My Mother filled our pantry with the bounty from this garden every year. She would can jams, salsas, and just about everything in-between. Don’t get me wrong, I still think the canning process is a little intimidating (as I’ve witness it go sideways) but I can’t help but feel a little closer to her and to my happy place in the mountains as I make more.
Here’s to making (the) most of it!
